Australian registration requirements

All Overseas and Australian nurses must be registered with the State Nursing Board where they work.

Nurses registered with a State Nursing Board are eligible for registration in other states under the Mutual Recognition Act 1992.

The requirements for most overseas nurses include:

English Language Proficiency:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
    • Test result of 7.O overall (Academic)
    • Band scores of Speaking 7.0, Writing 7.0, Listening 7.0, Reading 7.0
    • Overall 7.0 with no minimum band scores may be accepted
  • An English language test may not be required for:
    • New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, USA, Canada

Education Equivalent  to an Australian Nurse Education

  • An education institution and curriculum approved by the Australian State Nursing Board
  • A Bachelors degree or Diploma level (In NSW only Bachelor’s degrees are accepted).

Documentation to Verify Identity, Education, Registration, Experience:

  • Identity (passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate)
  • Nurse Education-Degrees and transcripts.
  • Registration and “Good Standing” as a nurse.
  • Personal and Professional references.

Undertake a Competency Based Assessment Program (CBAP).

  • Courses Accredited by the relevant State Nurses Board.
  • Clinical assessments in an Acute Care Australian Hospital.
  • Theoretical and Clinical assessments
  • Nurses from the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, USA and Canada may not be required to undertake CBAP, depending on education and experience.

  1. Apply for a Study Visa
    You will need a temporary visa that allows you to study and undertake the CBAP course in Australia.
    The average duration of most CBAP courses is 12 weeks.
  2. Travel to Australia
    Nursing Careers will arrange your travel to Australia, and look after all your needs in Australia
  3. Undertake & Pass the CBAP Course
    Nursing Careers support you during the course, and assist you in confirming your conditional registration.
  4. Apply for a Working Visa
    Nursing Careers will find you an employer who is prepared to sponsor you and your family and employ you on a 4 year work visa.
    We will submit the visa application on your behalf.
