What is a working visa?
An overseas nurse cannot work in Australia, even if registered, without a working visa.
A working visa has the following conditions:
Is approved by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC)- Maximum duration of 4 years
- Requires the following skills:
- English Language skills: IELTS 7.0 (7.0 Speaking/Writing, 6.5 Reading/Listening)
- Australian nurse registration with a State Board
- Requires an employer willing to sponsor the nurse
- The sponsor must :
- Be approved by the Department of Immigration

- Accept certain obligations
- Be approved by the Department of Immigration
- The visa holder must not:
- Cease to be employed by the sponsor
- Work in another occupation or position
- Work for another employer
- The family members eligible for approval include:
- Husband
- Children under 18
- Other Dependent family members( subject to conditions)
- All family members and the applicant must undertake:
- Medical and X Ray examinations ( subject to conditions)
- All approved family members can:
- Work without restrictions
- Attend primary, secondary and tertiary schools/colleges/Universities.
