Nursing Careers Australia’s Indian seminar success

Nursing Careers Australia Director Allan Pitman held a number of seminars for Indian nurses living in Bangalore, Cochin Kerala, Punee and Delhi. Of the many who attended the information session, Allan interviewed 36 nurses who are planning to attend bridging programs in Australia later this year in August and October.

In fact, Some of the nurses have already received approval from the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Authority (AHPRA). “We are able to enrol nurses in an approved University bridging program very quickly if they have already received an AHPRA approval letter,” Allan said. Furthermore, Nursing Careers Australia has guaranteed places for Registered Nurses who join their approved University bridging programs, which are run five times a year in February, April, June, August and October.

“There are other nurses who will be applying to AHPRA for approval to attend an approved Bridging Program, and will attend our February 2014 course,” he said. “We are able to help overseas nurses apply to AHPRA and receive approval relatively quickly compared to other agents. This is because we provide AHPRA with complete applications so they don’t have to request additional documents and thereby delay the approval for many months.”

In order to be eligible, Allan explained that overseas nurses are required to have the following in place:

  • BSc in Nursing
  • IELTS 7.0 in all modules (International English Language Test)
  • 2.5-3-years experience in Acute Care hospitals
  • Application and approval from AHPRA to attend an approved Bridging Course

“In 2013 there is still a shortage of Registered Nurses in Aged Care, Mental Health and regional and rural areas,” Allan explained.

The Australian government commissioned a task force, HealthWorkforce Australia, to project the demand for and the supply of Registered Nurses from 2014 to 2025. Published recently, the report highlighted workforce shortages from 2014 to 2025, from 80,000 to 147,000 Registered Nurses, depending on the assumptions made.
